Essays will be judged in terms of intellectual quality according to the standards used internationally by refereed journals of philosophy. The committee will look especially for clear, precise and creative philosophical argument. Authors should show suitable acquaintance with current work on their topic. The use of English must be satisfactory, but help will be offered if necessary to improve the English of essays selected for prizes in order to submit them for publication.
The Prize Committee will establish its own procedures for reading and assessing essays and for ranking prize-winning essays. Prize Committee members will assess a shortlist of submitted essays after initial screening for quality by the Chairman of the British Committee and other colleagues, but may also call upon the assistance of outside specialists. The decisions of the Prize Committee will be final.
The Prize Committee will seek publication of edited versions of prize-winning essays in English-language philosophy journals or in some other form.
GUIDANCE NOTE:
Rather than covering the whole of a set area, candidates should choose a topic within that area. For example, if the area were Truth, an essay could be submitted on one of the following questions:
What sort of item can be true or false: a sentence, a statement, a proposition or something else?
Can we know that a sentence or proposition generated from a system of axioms is true even though it cannot be proven from those axioms?
Is truth a matter of unconcealment rather than of correspondence?
What would be the consequences of denying that the concept of truth has any part to play in our account of language and the world?
Are there moral or aesthetic truths?
Is there a third value between truth and falsity? |
